Food in New Zealand is very expensive, most of the people I talk to are spending over $300 a week on their grocery bill.
I am constantly being told by politicians and the media that families struggling can not afford healthy food and the only way they can get their calories intake is from mcds, chips and coke!
This video is not meant to vilify anyone, it is designed to show families (2 adults and 2 children) wanting to budget how you can get all your calorie and nutritional needs for under $100 a week. The ingredients I have chosen can be scaled up or down, so don’t need to be bought in bulk. Also remember this is a basic budget designed for feeding your family and keeping them healthy, if you have a higher budget then please add as many fruit, eggs and vegetables as you like.
The food list in the video can make numerous different recipes (yes it’ll be repetitive), but it will produce 2050 calories and 61g of protein for $4.76 per person, per day.
When I look at mcds 1/4 pounder meal, you would need to buy two at $16 to get 2000 calories, only 59g of protein with less micro nutrients.
