What does the perfect job ad look like?

When listing a job with Student Job Search, there are steps you can take to make your ad stand out and ensure the process is as easy as possible for all involved.

Creating the perfect job ad does not need to be complicated. Look at it from a candidate’s perspective and consider what is most important to them.

Next time you’re putting a job ad together, think about these points:

Leave the novel writing to Stephen King

Keep your listing clear and concise. The key is to let potential candidates know what the job involves, and what skills they require, in the simplest way possible.

This means students can look at your ad and quickly decide if it is right for them and helps ensure you don’t get bombarded with applications from unsuitable candidates or those who are confused about what is required.

Avoid complicated corporate jargon and acronyms. Read through your listing from the perspective of someone who does not know your business or household and think about whether it would make sense to them.

Keep it real(istic)

There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Have a look at other job listings. How are they doing it? What stands out to you? Understanding that will give you an edge in the market.

Checklist - The recipe for a perfect job listing:

  • Job Title

  • Purpose of Role

  • Tasks and Duties

  • S.E.A.R

  • Skills – What skills do they require?

  • Experience – What experience do you expect the student to have?

  • Availability – Is the job full time/part time? Hours and days?

  • Resources – What does the employer provide? (e.g. on the job training, PPE, a work phone)

  • Benefits: Some people put this in with the Employee Value Proposition (EVP) which is about rewards, benefits, culture, and development opportunities a company offers employees in exchange for their skills, commitment, and contributions.
